Homemade Avocado Cream

Homemade avocado cream

No brunch is complete without a side of Avocado, but no skin care routine is complete without a few great Avocado-packed goodies either! We might not think of it as a typical skin care ingredient other than in our homemade DIY Avocado face creams, but Avocado is actually one of my favourite natural skin care ingredients, and in my opinion it is totally underrated! Avocado oil is incredibly hydrating and packed with beneficial nutrients, making it the perfect natural defence against dry skin as well as a superstar in natural anti-ageing skin care.

Besides tasting delicious as guacamole or spread on a warm piece of toast, avocados boast an impressive list of skin-boosting benefits. This is due to the healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals that are packed inside this nutritious fruit. Read more about the reasons why I love to include fruits in my homemade skincare products.

How can Avocado benefit your skin?

Avocado is naturally rich in skin-loving antioxidants and Omega 3+6 essential fatty acids as well as Vitamins E, C and K – perfect for boosting our skin no matter whether we are enjoying it on toast or in our facial moisturiser!  Thanks to its deeply hydrating properties, and nutrient benefits, Avocado Oil makes an incredible ingredient in natural skin care because of its ability to deliver rich moisture to dry skin, helping to prevent wrinkles, fine lines and creasing. This makes Avocado perfect in anti-ageing treatments, working to keep skin feeling soft, smooth, plump and hydrated.

Here are some of the ways that these ingredients help Avocado pack a powerful punch when it comes to skin benefits.

Benefits of Avocado for skin

1. Soothes skin conditions

As an anti-inflammatory agent, avocado can reduce the appearance of redness and swelling caused by skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. It can benefit our skin by stopping hyperpigmentation.

2. Prevents skin damage

Avocado is rich in antioxidants that fight free radicals damaging our skin cells. They also neutralise toxic chemicals found in chemical-laden skincare products. These antioxidants help prevent and repair damage to our skin caused by UV rays and other environmental pollutants.

Applying avocado on our face benefits us if we have sensitive skin and are more prone to skin damage.

3. Improves skin elasticity

As we age, the collagen levels in our skin begin to get depleted, and this causes our skin to lose its natural elasticity and become more wrinkled and saggy. Avocado is good for skin as it boosts collagen and can help improve our skin´s elasticity.

4. Minimizes breakouts

Whether we have sensitive or oily skin, breakouts are likely to happen. In some cases, overproduction of oil causes acne, which is where avocados come in. Applying avocado to our face benefits us by reducing oil production and acne.

While this is certainly a positive side effect of using avocado on our face, the effect may vary between individuals.

5. Improves overall skin health

Avocado is a powerhouse of nutrients that help improve the health of our skin, such as vitamins (A, B, C, and E) and minerals (potassium, iron, and manganese). It is a valuable addition to a skincare routine, as it keeps the skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing.

Additionally, these nutrients help fight off external toxins that can cause damage to our skin.

6. Prevents dry skin

Biotin, a vitamin derived from the B complex, is found in avocados. When used topically, biotin can help prevent dry skin. Try this excellent sheet mask for all skin types. It helps moisturize and keep acne at bay.

How To Use Avocado For Skin?

To get the most out of Avocado in our skincare routine, use it as an exfoliant, a face cream, or a facial scrub.

Raw Avocado is also good for the skin: we can simply mash it up and apply it to our face like a mask. Leave it on for about 10 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Alternatively, we can mix it with yogurt, oats, honey, and other ingredients to make a facial scrub or exfoliant.

Avocado Oil as a cleanser

How to make Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is made by extracting the oil from ripe Avocados, and has a number of uses, ranging from cooking, to use in hair and skin treatments. Because store-bought Avocado oil is often quite expensive, it’s often more economical to prepare the oil at home. Extracting the oil is quite easy, and depending on the method of extraction, you may be left with mashed Avocado, perfect for use in baking or in making fresh guacamole!

Method : Extracting the oil through cooking

Peel twelve avocados. Wash twelve avocados and cut each one in half around the pit. Use the knife to cut in a scooping motion around the pit until the two halves come apart. Use a spoon to scoop out the fruit of the avocado and deposit it in a food processor or blender. Dispose off the skin and the pit.

Puree the avocados. Turn the food processor or blender onto the puree setting. Mix the avocado fruit until it forms a smooth paste. Then scoop out the blended avocado and put it in a medium-sized pot.

Cook the avocados on medium heat. Turn the oven on to medium heat and heat the avocados in the pot, stirring every five minutes. When the mixture starts to boil, it will start bubbling and you should notice the avocado oil rising to the top.

Cook until the mixture gets dark. Keep cooking and stirring the mixture until the avocado changes from a light green to a dark green or brown, and the water has evaporated.

Scoop the avocado mixture into a bowl. When the avocado mixture has stopped cooking, spoon the mixture into a bowl. Place a clean, thin cloth such as cheesecloth on top of the bowl, then holding the cloth in place around the rim of the bowl, turn the bowl upside-down and pinch the corners off the cloth together so that you’re left with a sack of avocado.

Squeeze to strain the avocado. Squeeze the sack of avocado over a bowl to strain out the oil. The oil should come out drop by drop into the bowl. Keep changing your grip and squeezing for a minute or so until no more oil is coming out.

Pour the oil into a container. Once you have squeezed out all the oil, pour the oil from the bowl into a small bottle or into a container with a lid.

Your avocado oil is now ready for use!
